Chapter Fourteen
THE TAPESTRY THAT DOMINATED the wall in front of her featured rolling green hills backlit by a magnificent dawn, rays shooting into the atmosphere in every conceivable shade of golden thread. The irony of a vampire decorating his lair with images of sunrises was not lost on her.
At least, I assume this is his lair. Hollie looked around the chamber, noting how sumptuously it was decorated. Expensive fabrics on antique furnishings, art and tapestries, each featuring a rising sun, covered the gleaming, wood-paneled walls. And night blooming floors sprang from vases all over the room.
âCould you please let me go?â she said softly to the vampire who was still wrapped around her. But it wasnât Maz who released his grip.
âSorry about that,â Windy said, rolling out from under her skirt. He must have latched on to me at the last second before Maz teleported us here. âJust following protocol.â
Hollie remembered then how Gresh had demanded that the bot not leave her side. Heâd failed to prevent her escape from the workshop, however, although she assumed heâd earn an exemption on that once, given the extenuating circumstances.
âWhere are we?â she asked after gently extracting herself from Mazâs grip.
âWe are safe,â he replied, sniffing. When she continued to look at him, not accepting his lack of an answer, he continued, âWe are in my own pocket dimension. A place I have never brought another living soul.â Looking down at the robot, he let out a small hiss. âA place that no one used to know about.â
Windy put a little distance between himself and the angry vampire. Hollie inserted herself between them, putting a calming hand on Mazâs chest. âThis is like the bubble we were in before?â she asked, relieved when he nodded.
She fell onto a nearby sofa, letting out a sigh of pure comfort. The quiet of the pocket realm was a large shift after the chaos of the fight moments before. But before her mind could settle itself, she recalled that the entire thing had been started by their invasion of Nevâs bubble.
âSpeaking of pocket dimensions,â Hollie said in a conversational tone, âthat woman who was torturing me for information? Turns out, she owned the mirrored bubble we busted into and ripped apart.â
Mazâs eyes widened. âThat is why she came after you?â
Hollie nodded. âShe called herself Nev, but I have no idea if that was truly her name.â Hollie gave him a brief rundown of events, detailing the pretend apprenticeâs ruse. âBefore I knew it, she had me in chains.â
Maz scowled, running his hands through his hair in agitation. âI heard your scream, and I could not stop myself. I ran for you, and when I saw you in chains, I wanted to rip the head from that foul womanâs shoulders. But she was so bloody strong.â
Hollie couldnât disagree. âShe said something in the heat of battle. When she was torturing me, I told her about Dallon and his intent to trade me to Ahriman for his freedom. She seemed extremely interested in that name, and in Samaelâs.
